COIDA Registration

The Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act requires every employer to register with the Compensation Fund. The Fund pays medical costs and compensation when an employee is injured, disabled or killed while working — instead of the employee suing you personally.

• Every business that employs one or more people, including casual and part-time workers
• Companies with working directors who draw a salary
• Any provider bidding for commercial, estate or municipal work — a Letter of Good Standing is almost always demanded

• True sole operators with no employees and no assistants
• Businesses that only use independent, separately registered sub-contractors (although the client may still ask for their letters)

Employing staff without COIDA registration is a criminal offence. Without a Letter of Good Standing you will be turned away from most commercial sites, and an injury on site becomes a personal financial liability.

1. 1Register the business on the CF-Filing online portal.
2. 2Complete the W.As.2 registration form with your business and employee details.
3. 3Submit CIPC documents, director IDs and estimated annual earnings.
4. 4Receive your Compensation Fund registration number.
5. 5Submit the annual Return of Earnings (W.As.8) every year.
6. 6Pay the assessment invoice raised on your declared earnings.
7. 7Request your Letter of Good Standing once the assessment is paid.
8. 8Upload both the registration and the Letter of Good Standing to FIX IT.

Registration number: 5 – 21 working days. Letter of Good Standing: issued within a few days of the assessment being paid.

Return of Earnings must be submitted annually (typically by 31 May). The Letter of Good Standing is valid for 12 months or until the next assessment.
