1What is it?
Every person and company earning income in South Africa must be registered for income tax with the South African Revenue Service. Registration issues a tax reference number, and eFiling lets you request a Tax Compliance Status (TCS) PIN that third parties can use to confirm you are in good standing.
2Who needs it?
- Every provider earning income through FIX IT
- Every registered company, from the date of incorporation
- Anyone quoting for corporate, insurance or government work that requires a TCS PIN
3Who doesn't need it?
- Nobody is exempt from being registered, but individuals earning below the annual tax threshold may not be required to submit a return.
5Why is it important?
Tax non-compliance stops payouts from corporate clients, blocks tender work and can attract penalties and interest. A valid TCS PIN is the single fastest way to prove your business is legitimate.

Training costs
None required.
Other costs
Optional bookkeeper or tax practitioner fees, typically R350 – R1 200 per month for a small trade business.
10Expected turnaround time
eFiling registration is usually immediate. A tax number is typically issued within 24 hours to 5 working days. A TCS PIN is issued within minutes once your account is compliant.

14Frequently asked questions
Do I need a tax number to receive FIX IT payouts?
You must be registered as a taxpayer. FIX IT pays into your verified bank account and you remain responsible for declaring your income.
What is a TCS PIN?
A Tax Compliance Status PIN lets a client verify your compliance online without you sharing your full tax history.
I have old outstanding returns. What now?
File them, even if they are nil returns. SARS will not issue a compliant TCS PIN while returns are outstanding.
15How FIX IT verifies this
- You upload a SARS-issued document — a notice of registration, TCS PIN letter or tax clearance confirmation.
- Our reviewer checks that the taxpayer name and reference number match your FIX IT identity or registered company.
- Documents older than 12 months are declined and you are asked for a current one.
- Approval sets the tax compliance item on your provider compliance record.
