1What is it?
The Plumbing Industry Registration Board registers qualified plumbers, maintains the national plumber register, and authorises registered plumbers to issue Certificates of Compliance (CoC) for plumbing installations. Many municipalities and all major insurers require a PIRB CoC.

5Why is it important?
Only a registered plumber may issue a plumbing CoC. Insurers reject claims where work was signed off by an unregistered person, and municipalities can refuse property transfer certificates.

7Step-by-step guide

PIRB is an industry board, not a government department. Application and annual registration fees typically range from R1 000 to R3 000 per year depending on category.

Trade qualification and trade test typically R15 000 – R60 000 if not already held. CPD courses typically R500 – R2 500 per cycle.
Other costs
CoC booklets or electronic CoC credits, and licence card replacement fees.
10Expected turnaround time
Typically 2 – 6 weeks from a complete application, longer where a competency assessment is required.

14Frequently asked questions
Can I issue a CoC without PIRB registration?
No. Only a PIRB-registered and licensed plumber may issue a plumbing Certificate of Compliance.
Is PIRB the same as IOPSA?
No. PIRB is the registration board; IOPSA is the industry association. Many plumbers hold both.
What if my registration lapses mid-job?
You may not issue a CoC while lapsed. Renew before accepting compliance work.
