Refrigerant Handling Registration

Refrigerant handling registration certifies that a technician is competent to recover, recycle, charge and dispose of refrigerant gases safely and in line with South Africa's environmental obligations under the Montreal Protocol.

• Air-conditioning installers and service technicians
• Refrigeration technicians working on commercial cold rooms and display units
• Anyone recovering or charging refrigerant gas

• Technicians doing electrical or bracket work only, with no refrigerant circuit access
• Cleaners servicing filters on split units without opening the gas circuit

Venting refrigerant to atmosphere is an environmental offence, and manufacturers void equipment warranties where work was performed by an unregistered technician.

1. 1Complete accredited refrigerant safe-handling training for your category.
2. 2Complete the practical assessment on recovery and charging.
3. 3Apply to SAQCC Gas (Refrigeration) with your certificates.
4. 4Pay the registration fee and receive your registration card.
5. 5Ensure your recovery equipment and cylinders are compliant.
6. 6Upload the registration card to the FIX IT Business Centre.

Training 3 – 5 days; registration typically 2 – 6 weeks.

Renewed on the SAQCC cycle, generally every two to three years with refresher assessment.
